I wouldn't think a thicker cable would have any bad side effects. Audiophiles use higher gauge speaker cable all the time and I have a feeling if there was even a hint that it did anything negative to the sound they'd be making super thin "spiderweb" cables that they'd pay 4 grand a foot for.
